Sandinismo has always had a fundamental commitment to peace because it has always understood that Peace is the essential condition for the reduction of poverty and the true freedom and prosperity of Nicaraguan families. Dr. Gustavo Porras and the Special Commission of the National Assembly have constantly communicated this reality at the “We have a Nation” meetings throughout the country on Constitutional Reforms. In that consultation process, Dr. Porras explained that “we have to overcome poverty in order to have Freedom, Tranquility, Peace, Security and Stability. All these words interact with each other to give us what we need, namely, the happiness of the Nicaraguan people.”
Compañero Pablo Martínez Tellez, El Guadalupano, sang of this reality in his celebrated song of 2021,
We’ll all vote Frente Sandinista
Because only the Frente gives people a better future
Who created jobs for us all?
Only Sandinismo, no one else
Who fought to overcome ignorance?
Only Sandinismo, no one else
Who gave land to peasant families?
Only Sandinismo, no one else
Who multiplied the harvests?
Only Sandinismo, no one else
Who never sold out our nation?
Only Sandinismo, no one else...
Only Sandinismo ever understood that this economic democracy sung by the Guadalupano is an essential condition for achieving the freedom, security, stability and sovereignty of Nicaragua’s people . Peace is inseparable from these conditions, as Dr. Porras has observed."..these are three words that are totally related. There can be no peace if there is no Security, and there can be neither Peace nor Security if there is no Stability.”
This deep Sandinista understanding of Peace is reflected in Nicaragua’s Political Constitution, whose Article One reads, “Independence, sovereignty, national self-determination, security and peace are inalienable rights of the People and foundations of the Nicaraguan nation." In many of its other articles, the Constitution also refers to Peace and Stability, so Peace figures as a central value in the country’s political life of the country, one which is the duty of all Nicaraguans to defend.
The Sandinista concept of Peace as an essential permanent path of daily practice encourages fruitful attitudes and behavior which facilitate progress in all aspects of the life of Nicaragua’s families. Defending peace multiplies the possibilities of mutual benefit and shared human development. It is a constant thread in Sandinista thought which affirms the principle of the Common Good against the destructive selfishness of the coup-mongers defeated forever in 2018.
The commitment to peace has made possible the great social and economic victories of Nicaragua’s people once more presented over the last few days in the General Budget of the Republic for 2027. Central Bank president, Ovidio Reyes, explained how the main impulse of the Budget is to prioritize combating poverty by means of high social spending and investment in social and productive infrastructure.
In his presentation to the General Assembly, compañero Ovidio explained that, "Here there are hospitals being built, schools filled with children, roads uniting communities and bringing families closer. Every cent of this budget is designed to improve people's daily lives, so that mothers can take their child to the doctor free of charge, so that young people can study without paying fees, so that farmers can get in their harvest readily with lower costs.”
Integral to this categorical economic commitment to ensure the Common Good of Nicaragua’s families, restoring their rights as protagonists in all aspects of national life, is Sandinismo’s spiritual dimension. Our Foreign Minister of Dignity, Father Miguel d'Escoto, argued that in order to consolidate the Revolution, we Sandinistas have to dedicate ourselves to creating the world we long for: “There is no revolution without mystique... we Sandinistas are in this world but we owe ourselves to another world. We owe ourselves to a different world, in other words, to the world for which our heroes and martyrs gave their lives.”
This spiritual vision has been permanent in Sandinismo since the time of General Sandino himself and of national heroine Blanca Aráuz with their great faith in Love and Justice as the world’s originating principles. Sandino wrote in his Manifesto Light and Truth, "When the majority of humanity realizes that it lives by the Spirit, then injustice will end forever and only Divine Justice will rule: the only daughter of Love... then, oppressed peoples will break their chains of humiliation, with which the imperialists of the earth have wanted to hold us back... The only thing that will sin without trace is injustice.”
As Compañera Rosario has affirmed, "We are convinced that Peace is the only Way ahead for the Human Family; Consensus, Peace, Agreement over the ways ahead towards Rights throughout the World." And our Comandante Daniel has explained to us, "These are times in which all that’s left to is to strive very hard, with great strength of Spirit, with great Strength of the Soul, striving for Peace, striving for Reconciliation, striving for understanding among Nicaragua’s Brothers and Sisters, and striving for understanding among the Peoples of the World…”
And over the last few days Compañera Rosario has reaffirmed Sandinista Nicaragua¡s vocation for Peace, saying "What do we always promote? Concord, Harmony, Ideals and Values of Family and Community... From This Nicaragua of ours, extending our hand, our embrace, our heart, to all the Peoples of the World, and in particular to the Peoples and Families of our Central America, we always propose Brother and Sister hood, Solidarity, Comprehension, Understanding, Respect, so as to advance together in our indispensable struggles for a Life made more secure in every way.”
